Snoopy's Story
We adopted Snoopy from the Kinston SPCA in Kinston, NC. She was about 3 months old at the time. She officially belongs to my youngest son, Ben. She came home to meet our two current dogs, Sparky and Rascal. She was adopted on a weekend and couldn't see our vet until Monday and in the meantime she had horrible problems with diarrhea. The vet was not sure if she had giardia or coccidia or both and treated her assuming both. It sure made the housetraining get off to a slow start! Soon she was well on her way to be housetrained (dogs should be trained NOT broken), as well as crate trained. It takes a long time to get all the puppy shots and spaying done but soon you are past all those puppy trials. She won everyone's heart with her totally cute poses. She can tilt her head, or make a comical face and everyone pays attention.
Here she is with our cat, Popcorn. He does not appreciate her antics!
When Snoopy was almost a year old she began developing bald spots. A trip to the vet confirmed that she had mange (caused by mites) but it was generalized demodiatic and not sarcoptic mange. She is currently undergoing 4 months of treatment with Ivermectrin, which we are told has a 100% success rate! However it is given orally as a liquid and has a horrible taste. Poor Snoopy! We are trying to make it as pleasant as we can and Snoopy is being a real champ about the whole thing. Adopting a dog carries a large responsibility, as you never know what will happen! A large number of dogs are euthanized every year due to demodiatic mange! We are glad to see Snoopy getting better.
Snoopy is known as Danger Dog to her close friends who know that she is a super hero in disguise. Like all super heroes she has a convenient disguise when she is not involved in a rescue or other "super" act. She is a stand up comedienne, bringing laughter to all around her! Don't give away her "secret identity" but watch her response if you call her "Danger Dog".
UPDATE: June 24, 1999. Snoopy earned her Canine Good Citizen award from the American Kennel Club (AKC). Good work, Ben and Snoopy! July 4, 1999. Snoopy has fininshed her treatment with Ivermectrin and her coat is wonderful. She is full grown now and weighs 57 pounds.
